WEST CHESTER – Mansfield not only had to battle the defending NCAA Regional Champions, but also stifling heat and humidity in dropping a 6-0 decision to West Chester in the season opener for both schools.

“West Chester has a very good team and we knew if would be a big challenge for us,” said head coach Tim Demspey. “We were able to play with them for the first 15 minutes of each half, but their speed, depth and the heat and humidity were just too much to overcome.”

West Chester scored three times in each period while the Mountaineers were never able to generate a serious offensive threat.

It marks the earliest opening game in school history with the PSAC and NCAA pushing the schedule up by a week to accommodate the NCAA Division II National Fall Festival held every four years.

The Mountaineers will travel to Georgian Court University. Mansfield’s home opener is set for Wednesday, August 30 when they host Shippensburg.
